MEET Gergana Mladin – Children’s Books Illustrator

Children’s Illustrator of “The Adventures of Peanut, Butter, Jelly, and Banana”

BIO

I discovered my love for drawing as a child and knew exactly what I wanted to do when I grew up. Some say it’s a great blessing to find your professional calling early—and to trust it. For me, drawing has always been a faithful companion throughout life.

My artistic journey has been colorful and ever-evolving. I began with applied arts, then immersed myself in the magic of ceramics, where I spent ten unforgettable years. Eventually, I earned a degree in media design. Art is vast—each path within it is unique and rich with emotion. But which one should you follow?

At the very beginning, a wise teacher told me—quite firmly—”You’re meant for children’s illustration or animation!” He must have seen something I hadn’t yet discovered. Years later, I finally realized: my true creative home lies in the world of children’s books. That’s where I feel most alive—surrounded by colors, imagination, and little wonders.

This is my haven, a magical space where heart and fantasy dance together. I adore children—they’re sincere, direct, and never pretend. They’re my toughest yet most honest critics, my constant inspiration, and my true teachers. Every time I see a spark of wonder or a smile in their eyes, I know I’ve done something meaningful—and that’s the greatest reward.

Why I Chose “The Adventures of Peanut, Butter, Jelly, and Banana”

Why this book? It all began with Mariela (aka Jama)—a radiant soul full of positive energy and an infectious smile. Her story immediately drew me in. It’s lighthearted, playful, and gently imparts knowledge while encouraging children to stay curious and kind.

To me, a good children’s book must leave something behind—a feeling, a lesson, or a spark of discovery. This one does exactly that! The addition of a family tree makes it deeply personal—a lifelong keepsake that children can cherish as they grow.

Illustrating these “delicious” characters was an especially sweet experience. It felt like each of them had been waiting somewhere up in the clouds—not to be summoned with a magic wand, but to come alive through my pencil (or rather, stylus!). 😊
